The Sunshine State?

IMG_2288 IMG_2302

We have been in Ft. Lauderdale Florida since Monday. Tom had a big conference to attend here and we thought it would be a nice opportunity for a get away. Unfortunately we came during a rainy week. We haven’t had too much time in the sun and that STINKS! How is this called the sunshine state after this week lol? We have one more full day here and it’s the only “partly cloudy” day in the forecast. I hope we can soak up some sun tomorrow, but we will see. Yesterday we were on the beach with black clouds and rain……. That didn’t stop us from sitting in the sand and making sand castles. Audrey Godzilla had a lot of fun putting us to work and then smashing it. Last summer we took Audrey to Mexico and she was not a fan of the beach. This time she LOVES it! She asks every day if we can go to the beach and it makes me mad that it’s RAINING! She finally wants to go play at the beach and it rains every day. Too bad. I’m still so happy we live in Texas where we are a drive away from water. I want to plan a trip this summer to South Padre Island to participate in the sea turtle release. This is something I’ve wanted to do for years and I am just giddy that we can do it in our own backyard YAY!

Thoughts Of A Sleep Deprived Mom

IMG_2052

Sleep, what a topic! It’s common knowledge by now that when you become a parent sleep becomes a distant memory. Most people dread this part of being a parent because it is one of the harder things we have to deal with physically. When you are pregnant with your first baby people tell you what to expect, but expecting doesn’t prepare you for the physical toll. Some people think ‘I’ve been without sleep for a few days, or maybe a week so I will be fine’ but the loss of sleep could last for YEARS! Tom always liked to say “I used to work 36 hour shifts in the hospital without any sleep. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again”, but he conveniently forgets that he did it 20 years ago!! Lucky for him I did 100% of the night care with Audrey and I’ll do it with the next baby too.  It’s like being anorexic, only with the zzzZZZ. Parents are ‘sleeporexic’! If you don’t eat properly it will take a toll, just like not getting adequate sleep. Who can function without sleep? Well parents try, what choice do we have? I’m at the point now where I’m always tired. I love the idea of getting a nice restful sleep, but it never seems to happen. My hubby is wonderful at letting me sleep in (9am) on the weekends, but my body isn’t. My mommy brain has to decide between sleep and getting something done. Do I want to take advantage of an early bedtime or wash another load of laundry? Most of the time I choose to get something done. Sometimes when I get a “normal” amount of sleep it makes me slow all day. It even gives me a headache! So I long for more sleep but when I get it I don’t feel well. Ahhhh long gone are those pre-baby days where sleep was plentiful. Being a parent is a new phase of life and lack of sleep is part of it. I do miss the pre-baby days, but those days came and went like they were supposed to. I don’t feel like I let them go too soon, timing was great. It doesn’t mean that I don’t drool when I imagine how easy sleep used to be.

Easter 2015

Happy Easter 2015!

This was our first Easter in San Antonio and it was nice. We actually didn’t go to any of the Easter things set up around San Antonio because the whole weekend was kind of wet and cloudy. Instead we went driving around looking at pop up campers. So far no luck but we have narrowed down the type we would like to purchase. I didn’t realize how hard it is to find pop ups. Everyone seems to sell trailers or RV’s, but hardly anyone has pop ups unless they are trade ins. The Monday after Easter it was nice and sunny so we hid eggs around the yard so Audrey could find them. I get asked a lot how we like to celebrate our holidays because we tend to be on the more conservative side of the festivities. I want my kids to have fun with Easter, but not at the expense of losing WHY we celebrate Easter. Ask yourself a simple question “When my children wake up Easter morning what thoughts will cross their mind?” Will it be about Jesus and his resurrection? Or will it be about the toys and candy that they get because the Easter Bunny showed up? Realistically candy and toys will usually trump the resurrection for young children, but as they grow so should their understanding of Easter. As my children grown I would love their minds to be on God Easter morning, with an understanding that we get to hunt for goodies BECAUSE Jesus died on the cross. Not because some egg obsessed bunny runs around hiding them. If we don’t build their foundation who will?
